The 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off today and whether you’re a serious football fan or only follow it because your country is playing, it’s still a great excuse to have a few friends round, grab a few drinks and (the bit we’re most excited about) share good food. And it’s because of the latter that we fancied sharing with you a few of our favourite football foodie finds to provide some inspiration for your own World Cup get-together, so you can grab the ingredients for tonight’s 9pm (GMT) match or prepare yourself for England’s first match on Saturday.
Food like chicken wings, popcorn and crisps are easy crowd pleasers but with the World Cup being hosted in Brazil, there’s a real chance to take a culinary leap and prepare a more interesting selection of nibbles.
Pastel Frito de Frango – A traditional Brazilian street food delicacy, we think pastels would make a great party food dish.
Pao de Queijo – You can’t really go wrong with bread and cheese and these simple Brazilian bread rolls are sure to become an instant classic. Great served plain or with salsa, they’re gluten and wheat free too!
Brazilian Beef Croquetes – Think of these as Brazilian spring rolls, featuring a crunchy outside and gooey, meaty inside.
Jalapeño Popper Dip – A delicious cheesy dish in itself, this would be great accompanied with tortilla chips or flatbreads.
Churros – These crispy cinnamon donut cousins are sure to be a favourite, an ideal snacking dessert and great with chocolate dipping sauce.
If you’re planning on an all-out FIFA-themed party then Coca Cola is a great drink choice. As one of the official sponsors, it will be easy to pick up a few FIFA branded bottles or cans and with their Share-A-Coke campaign back up for the summer, you might even be able to get cans with your guest’s names on.
Classic Caipirinha – The official cocktail or Brazil using the spirit Cachaça, Caipirinhas are a refreshing, zingy twist on the more well-known mojito. Alcohol can be easily substituted for ginger beer for a just as tasty virgin version.
If you wanted to go all out with everything, whether it’s for kids or not, we love this World Cup Themed Party from Kara’s Party Ideas.
Finger-food is a definite winner when it comes to match time but post-game, with the sun finally deciding to make an appearance, getting out into the garden and starting up the barbecue will really impress your guests.
